Cook Strait crossing

Return trip leaving from Mana, to Waikawa Bay marina.


This ride is limited to 30 riders and registration is required, you cannot just turn up on the day.

On the day:

  • Meet at the Wellington powerboat club clubrooms at 7:00am.
  • Riders must be over 15 years of age.
  • No passengers allowed.
  • No 2-stroke powered vessels due to reliability issues in the past.
  • As this trip can get rough we have made the decision to not allow Seadoo Spark models on the trip.

You must have:

  • Riding gear:
    • Wetsuit
    • Suitable footwear
    • PFD (Lifejacket)
    • Helmet (Motocross style or similar – Must be DOT, Snell or ECE standard approved)
    • Gloves and Goggles are recommended.
  • Tow rope
  • Fully charged cellphone in waterproof container.
  • You may also wish to bring:
    • Hand-held VHF radio
    • Flares
    • Distress beacon (EPIRB)
  • Ensure your ski is full of coolant, oil and fuel.
  • You must being a CREDIT or DEBIT CARD for refuelling, also bring a minimum of $200 cash as a backup in the case of your card not working at the marina fuel pump.
  • We recommend you bring some snacks / drinks as food outlets are not easy to get to at Waikawa
  • You must refuel your ski in Waikawa.

 

Entry fee:

  • $50 for WJSC members
  • $100 for non-members

Due to costs related to organising and running the crossing we will only be able to offer refunds up to 7 days before the ride, except in the case of a cancellation or postponement.

Social license:

As we are affiliated to the NZJSBA and this event is NZJSBA sanctioned, all riders must hold either an NZJSBA race license or social license.

If you do not have a current license you will get one as part of the registration form below, the cost for this is $20.00 and this is valid for the entire season.

Cancellation:

In the event of an adverse weather forecast, there will be an update on the likeliness of the ride being cancelled/postponed earlier in the week for those that are travelling from outside of Wellington, with a final call being made on the Thursday prior to the ride.

Notifications of a cancellation/postponement will be sent out via email and published on our Facebook page.

In the event of a cancellation/postponement, there will be an option of a full refund, or to remain on the list for the postponement date/next crossing.

The postponement date for this ride is Sunday 12th May 2024.

Registration:

The Cook Strait crossing is limited to 30 riders.

The registration form will allow more than 30 people to register, we will try to keep an eye on numbers while registration is open and close the form once we reach maximum, but there is still a chance you will be able to register when there are no positions available.  full refunds will be made for those that do not make it onto the list of riders.

Once you have registered you will receive an email with the club bank account details to pay your entry fee into. Payment must be made before your name is added to the rider list.

The NZJSBA season runs from November 1st to October 31st, If you will not be purchasing a Full Race License before the ride you will need to purchase a Social license.
